So the students are back in Liverpool and Discoteca Poca has a great welcome party planed in the form of Sam Russo. An increasingly regular fixture at Fabric in London, Russo’s roots were originally based in Garage, but his journey from playing the Shoreditch circuit at the tender age of 18 have seen him develop his sound into a dubbier mandate, bolstered by sexy house and techno.
Sam has an open minded approach to the floor, influenced in no small part by his series of prolific studio partnerships with the likes of Huxley, Matt Tolfrey and Craig Richards. These have led to playing for heavyweight nights including Cocoon, Circo Loco and The Zoo Project, with bigger things to come for 2013.
His love for off kilter melodies fits perfectly with Discoteca Poca. Held monthly in the aptly named ‘Hold’ of The Shipping Forecast, this basement venue is one that must be experienced, stark brick walls, small capacity; the only venue in Liverpool where you can touch the low ceiling with one hand and the DJ with the other, all conjure an underground and unique old school rave atmosphere.
Russo prides himself on finding unique tracks no one has heard of or played before, it is this attitude that keeps alive the true spirit of DJing, a dab hand at both vinyl and digital, his ability to blend both old and new is a unique art form. Currently unleashing low slung electronic weapons for Leftroom and Air London, Russo’s ethos is “good music, no rules” an attitude shared by Discoteca Poca residents MrPaul (Chibuku and Waxxx), Jimmy Allen (Peach and MuMu) and guest Julius Winfield (& Ting).
