The brand new Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza has revealed Neneh Cherry as the latest artist to play its outdoor stage this summer as part of the hotel’s series of musical events during its debut season.
The Swedish-born singer-songwriter will be joined by London duo RocketNumberNine, Ibiza regular DJ Sasha and DJ/Producer Brian Cross for an exclusive performance at Europe’s first Hard Rock Hotel on Friday 20 June. With such an exciting line-up, the collaborations will showcase the versatility and unique style for which Cherry has become known.
Cherry’s early years were spent between a loft apartment in New York and an old school house in a forest in south Sweden. Living alongside her stepfather, the legendary jazz musician Don Cherry, she was exposed to some of the world’s greatest musical talent on a regular basis and at 16 she moved to London and burst onto the UK music scene as part of post-punk group, Rip Rig + Panic. The release of her first solo album in 1989, ‘Raw Like Sushi’, was one of the first to deliver hip-hop culture to a British audience and brought with it a Brit Award, which Cherry later had stylist, Judy Blame, melt down and turn into jewellery. ‘7 Seconds’, Cherry’s 1994 duet with Senegalese singer, Youssou N’Dour, was a worldwide hit and saw Cherry receive her second Grammy nomination and win “Best Song Title” at the MTV Awards.
The singer released her fourth studio album earlier this year, ‘Blank Project’, receiving international acclaim after a break of almost 20 years since her previous album release. Her new sound, which sees poetic vocals fuse with avant-electronica and occasional flurries of rapid instrumentation, was born from a period of introversion following the passing of Cherry’s mother, the Swedish artist Moki Cherry. While her sound may be new, Cherry’s unstoppable energy and spirit that have been so apparent since her teenage days are still very much alive and visitors to the Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza this summer can expect a unique performance showcasing both the old and the new.
