What lies beyond the frame of De Nachtwacht? Audio Obscura posed that question to techno pioneer Jeff Mills, inviting him to study Rembrandt’s masterpiece and respond through his own art. The resulting film will be presented to the public for the first time during Amsterdam Dance Event, at the Rijksmuseum where it was created.
An invitation-only premiere takes place in the Gallery of Honour on Wednesday, October 21. Public screenings follow in the museum’s auditorium from Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25. A limited number of complimentary tickets are available courtesy of KPN as founder of Rijksmuseum and connectivity partner of Audio Obscura.
Conceived by Audio Obscura, interpreted by Jeff Mills
Mills imagined a story extending beyond Rembrandt’s canvas: the arrival of Marie de’ Medici. What she represented to him as a patron of the arts inspired both his music and the movements of dancer Sophie Boursier. It is an imagined response to De Nachtwacht, rather than a historical account of the scene depicted.
The film leads viewers through the Gallery of Honour towards the painting, where the performance unfolds in three parts. Mills begins behind the decks. Boursier then appears before the canvas, giving physical form to the presence he imagined. Finally, Mills returns to perform live. When the music ends, only Rembrandt’s work remains in view.
Boursier’s movements stay connected to the painting’s place on screen, as though a figure from Mills’ imagined world has stepped into the gallery. Director Hans Pannecoucke repeatedly draws the camera towards De Nachtwacht and back again, revealing a changed scene each time.
“It was a great pleasure to create, explore and perform in the presence of Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The painting is an incredible source of inspiration and invites you to look, think and imagine in a different way.” – Jeff Mills
A new encounter with De Nachtwacht
“We didn’t ask Jeff Mills to play a DJ set with De Nachtwacht as a backdrop. We asked him to study the painting and respond to it as an artist. He built an entire world around it, from the music and dance to the way viewers approach the work. This project captures what Audio Obscura stands for: we create culture, not just events.” – Jeroen Fontein, co-founder and managing director of Audio Obscura
Creating culture, not just events
For Audio Obscura, a location is a starting point for work that could only exist there. The organisation brings electronic music together with art, architecture and places with a story of their own. It has previously presented electronic music in the IJpassage at Amsterdam Central Station and, during Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary celebrations, helped transform the A10 motorway into the Highway Rave.
The Rijksmuseum presentation opens Audio Obscura’s ADE week. Day and night programmes at the G-STAR RAWFACTORY follow, before the organisation closes the week on Sunday at The Loft in the A’DAM Tower.
KPN is the project’s connecting partner. As the Rijksmuseum’s founder, KPN helps make art and culture accessible to a broad audience worldwide.
