About the film:

Desire: The Carl Craig Story is an intimate portrait of legendary techno producer, DJ and record label founder Carl Craig, and an ode to his beloved city of Detroit. Raised in a middle-class African American family, Carl’s parents encouraged his artistic pursuits, even when they challenged his family’s tradition of pursuing higher education. Against the backdrop of Detroit’s decline, resilience and recovery, the film traces Craig’s extraordinary career and explores the influences that shaped his genre-defying approach to techno.

A pioneer of the second generation of Detroit techno artists, Craig has spent more than thirty-five years pushing the boundaries of electronic music. From the dance floor to the concert hall, his work has transcended genre and inspired jazz musicians and classical ensembles around the world to reinterpret his music in new and unexpected ways. Now, at the pinnacle of his career, Craig faces challenges that could force him to step away from the dance floor and confront what music, Detroit and his own legacy mean to him.

Featuring Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald and James Lavelle, Desire: The Carl Craig Story brings together the artists and collaborators who have shared Craig’s journey and helped carry techno and electronic music from Detroit to audiences around the world.
