Armin van Buuren presents a new 10-minute mini-documentary that turns the spotlight onto a different protagonist: the audience. Created around his A State of Trance residency at [UNVRS], the project explores through a psychological lens what happens in the minds of the people on the dancefloor during the artist’s extended five-hour sets.
For the documentary, Armin and his team collaborated with professional psychotherapist Rachel Giddings to explore questions surrounding human connection, the emotional intensity of shared musical experiences and the sense of belonging that can emerge when thousands of people experience the same moment together.
The documentary stems directly from the concept behind Armin van Buuren’s debut residency at [UNVRS]. Across five consecutive Mondays, from 7 September to 5 October, the artist is celebrating 25 years of A State of Trance with five extended five-hour sets, each conceived as a complete musical journey and an opportunity to bring his international community together in Ibiza.
“It has been fascinating to look at the dancefloor through a psychological lens during my five-hour show. We often talk about what music does to us, but rarely about what actually happens to us when we experience it together. Why do we feel connected to strangers? Why can a moment on the dancefloor move us so deeply? And why can music make us feel like we’re part of something bigger? The DJ is often at the centre of attention, but the real magic happens on the dancefloor. This documentary is about the people who experience it; their emotions, their connections, and the profound effect that music and collective experience can have on us” – Armin van Buuren.

THE DANCEFLOOR TAKES CENTRE STAGE
The idea connects with one of the core principles behind the residency: understanding A State of Trance not simply as music, but as a shared experience. What began as a radio show in 2001 celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, having evolved into an international platform reaching 44 million listeners across more than 80 countries and producing more than 100 events across five continents.
At [UNVRS], that collective dimension takes on an entirely new scale. The extended sets give Armin the space to develop a five-hour musical narrative, taking the audience through different moments of tension, release and euphoria. As the original residency announcement described, thousands of fans experience the same breakdown, the same build and the same climax in unison, turning every night into a shared experience.
The new documentary takes that idea one step further by asking why that experience can feel so powerful: what emotional mechanisms come into play when a crowd dances together, how music can create connections between complete strangers, and why certain moments on a dancefloor can remain with us long after the night has ended.
The result deliberately shifts attention away from the traditional focus on the DJ. As Armin himself puts it, while the artist may be at the centre of the spectacle, “the real magic happens on the dancefloor.”
A STATE OF TRANCE CONTINUES AT [UNVRS]
The release of the mini-documentary coincides with the final stretch of Armin van Buuren presents A State of Trance, which began on 7 September and continues every Monday until 5 October. The series marks A State of Trance’s debut at [UNVRS] and is built around five extended five-hour performances from Armin celebrating the project’s 25th anniversary.
This Monday, 21 September, Armin will be joined by Argy for a special B2B, alongside Youna. Over in Bunker, the line-up features Devereaux and GIA.
On Monday, 28 September, the next chapter will see Armin go B2B with Funk Tribu, alongside Ginchy, while Lawton and MDDLTN take control of Bunker.
Finally, on Monday, 5 October, Armin will bring the residency to a close with his final extended five-hour set. Sarrah De Warren and Dan Harrison will complete the night’s programme in Bunker.
Across the residency, Armin is also joined throughout the season by artists including Eli Brown, Hannah Laing, Laura Van Dam and Ruben de Ronde, among others, adding another dimension to a celebration marking a quarter-century of A State of Trance.
With this new mini-documentary, the anniversary goes beyond the music itself to examine from a new perspective what has sustained A State of Trance for 25 years: the community on the other side of the DJ booth.
